BT provides employees a collaborative encyclopedia and several specialty Wikis that enable contribution and knowledge sharing across the organization.

BT (previously British Telecom) is one of the world's leading providers of communications solutions and services operating in 170 countries. BT's principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet products and services. BT consists principally of four lines of business: BT Global Services, Openreach, BT Retail and BT Wholesale.

The Challenge

With 104,000 global employees, BT wanted to encourage cross-group knowledge sharing across the enterprise. In order to do this, BT needed to create a collaborative authoring environment that supported information sharing among its four business lines. Having already purchased a JotBox appliance from JotSpot (now Google), the challenge was to create a collaborative content development platform that went beyond the 'create a new page' model supported by most Wikis.

The Solution

The JotSpot Wiki was chosen for its ease of customization and application development capabilities. Since BT planned to introduce multiple Wiki applications, a two-phase strategy was employed to allow application owners the freedom to create separate Wikis that would later be combined into a single Wiki application platform that provided common access to each knowledge domain. CommunityXPerts™ developed the following Wikis:
  • BTpedia: A collaborative encyclopedia where specific facts, telecom definitions, etc. are documented, discussed and tagged for future reference. Anyone in BT can contribute an article to BTpedia which can be about any aspect of the organization, from products and services to explaining complicated acronyms.
  • The Edge: As the name implies, this Wiki took an edgy look and incorporated social networking media that enabled employees with the ability to author and access blogs, podcasts, videos, and RSS Feeds.
  • MyPages: In the spirit of MySpace, this Wiki gives each BT employee their own personal site where they can network with others throughout the organization. The personal sites include a blog and any number of Wiki pages an employee wishes to create and share with others.

Each of the Wikis has its own look and feel. Through the programming model supported by Jot (client and server-side JavaScript and its own JotScript tags), the finished look of each Wiki application is in line with consumer internet sites rather than a stock Wiki user interface.

The Benefits

BTpedia provides employees across the global enterprise with easy access to a growing knowledge base of information they can individually contribute to and share with others. In addition, the social networking tools provided by The Edge and MyPages enable employees to create their own voice on topics of interest to them and to others in the organization. As a result, communication and collaborartion channels have opened up that didn't exist before leading to a content-rich environment that is accessible by all.
